Recommended Road Rides - designed to get you in shape.
Having experienced the island ourselves many times, we have put together some suggested routes you may like to try. Of course you'll do your own thing but these take in some of the best roads on the island. Either way buy yourself a cheap fold up map and take it with you. Many hire car places give them away free.



The North
Some of the more taxing riding is in the north of the Island.

Route 1:Haria and Return
Exit the villa(s) and either follow the road down through the village to the LZ10 or take the third exit at the mini roundabout and joing the LZ10 slightly further north.

Turn right onto the LZ10, heading north towards Teguise and Haria. This road drags upwards and if its a headwind can be testing. Stay on this road as it winds itsway north towards the Space Telescope and climbs gradually with a couple of steep hairpins thrown in for good measure. The views at from the top out towards the coast are fantastic and well worth the effort of the climb.

Mirador del Rio

Alternatively you can head north towards The Mirador del Rio ( fantastic views of Graciosa from here ) then sweep round south along the LZ1. At the bottom join the LZ1 and follow signs towards Arrecife. This road is a bit non inspiring so you may want to cut through through Mala, past The Jardin de Cactus which rejoins the LZ1 further south.

Look for the signs for Teseguite and Teguise which you will follow, leaving the LZ1 and heading inland. This road climbs gradually but with a head wind can be a tough one. Follow this road back towards Teguise and rejoin the LZ10 where you turn left, back to Nazaret. Always look for the Castle on the hill top as a guide to being near base. The short route, turning right through Tabayesco takes approx 2 - 2.5 hrs Add another 45 mins to 1hr for the long route, depending on your fitness levels. Cyan colour shows route ( red circle indicates villas location )

Riding the above route counter clockwise gives you the opportunity of riding up the winding 10km climb from Tabayesco. This climb is known well to many pro teams, like CSC and organised training camps. Apparently 30 minutes from bottom to top is good., 25 mins is very good.

Route 2: Famara and Return
Exit the villa(s) and follow the road down through the village to the T Junction and turn left onto the LZ10. Take the 1st right after the social club on the right.The road surface isnt the best but its a short stint to the next junction, with the LZ30.

Junction with LZ30 ( turn right )

Turn left here and power up the long drag to the roundabout with the superb Monumento el Campasino nearby ( shown right ), road surface is very good here and the climb is gradual. Take the first right at the roundabout and follow the signs for La Santa and Tao. The LZ20..

Road to Soo ( excellent )

Road undulates to the next roundabout which isnt far away, again head towards La Santa, straight over. Good road undulates with some testing power climbs then drops. Look for the right turn signposted SOO and take that right turn onto the LZ401. This is a great, fast road, it drops down to SOO near the coast ( road shown left ) and is fairly straight.

Road to Famara ( poor surface )

The road ends at a T Junction, bear right towards Famara. This road drops right down to the sea and the views are fantastic and make up for the poor road surface. Famara is a great beach where you'll find lots of surfers and few tourists. Once here follow the road round and look for signs for Arrecife and Teguise. Good road climbs gradually with a kick at the end where it rejoins the LZ30.

From here you can either turn right back to the B road you started on signposted Nazaret or if feeling good turn left towards Teguise. The drag into Teguise at the end of the ride can be a tough one, especially if its a breezy headwind. Once in Teguise follow signs for the LZ10 and you'll soon be back at the villa. Ride Time... 2 hrs for the longer route depending on the strength of the head wind.

Always make sure you take plenty water and some food with you.

Route 3: A Quick Scutch
If you're looking to squeeze a quick ride in then here's a route you can do that you can ride fast but will test you as there are a couple of good short sharp climbs.
Takes about 1 hour.

Exit the villa(s) and follow the road down through the village to the T Junction and turn left onto the LZ10. Stay on this road towards Arrecife, straight over at the 1st roundabout ( 2 miles ) then take the 1st right at the next roundabout ( Ceasar Manrique Roundabout - pic right ).

Cycle past Ceasar Manriques home ( worth a visit ) carved into the lava rock and up the hill which approaches. Stay on this road as it climbs and flattens then drags to San Bartolome.

Take the 1st right at the next roundabout towards the Monumento al Campesino where take 1st right onto the LZ30 towards Teguise.

At the bottom of the long gradual decent look for a small signpost ( right ) to Nazaret. Follow this b-road back to the LZ10 where you turn left, then right back up the small climb to the Villas. This is also a good quick route done in reverse. Appologies for the fold lines in the map scanned. It was the one I took with me on the bike last time I was there.
